Anna Akhmatova

Akhmatova, Anna, pseudonym of ANNA ANDREYEVNA GORENKO (b. June 11 [June 23, New Style], 1889, Bolshoy Fontan, near Odessa, Ukraine, Russian Empire--d. March 5, 1966, Domodedovo, near Moscow), Russian poet recognized at her death as the greatest woman poet in Russian literature. Akhmatova began writing verse at the age of 11 and at 21 became a member of the Acmeist group of poets, whose leader, Nikolay Gumilyov, she married in 1910 but divorced in 1918. The Acmeists, through their periodical Apollon ("Apollo"; 1909-17), rejected the esoteric vagueness and affectations of Symbolism and sought to replace them with "beautiful clarity," compactness, simplicity, and perfection of form--all qualities in which Akhmatova excelled from the outset. Her first collections, Vecher (1912; "Evening") and Read More

I have no idea why Yahoo! will not update my description of this site, but as you can see, I have chosen to remove some of the authors / poets because of space restrictions. Please do not be dissapointed if you have missed Akhmatova, Chekhov and Mandel'stam et al, they have been gone for a long while. To make up for it, click on Mayakovsky at the top of this page and have a dose of futurism. LE FastCounter Any questions or comments to Read More

BORIS PASTERNAK (1890-1960) "Anyone desiring a quiet [non-public] life has done badly to be born in the twentieth century." Leon Trotsky "Good fortune will elevate even petty minds, and give them the appearance of a certain greatness and stateliness, as from their high place they look down upon the world; but the truly noble and resolved spirit raises itself, and becomes more conspicuous in times of disaster and ill fortune." Plutarch "Am I a gangster or murderer? Of what crime do I stand condemned? I made the whole world weep at the beauty of my land." &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Like many Russian intellectuals of his time, Boris Pasternak lived a life of fear and insecurity. Study Guide for Dostoyevsky: Notes from Underground

Study Guide for Dostoyevsky: Notes from Underground Using this Guide List of other study guides Notes from Underground is one of the most influential pieces of fiction in Western European history. It has attracted attention for many reasons. 1) It contains an all-out assault on Enlightenment rationalism and the idea of progress which foreshadows many such assaults in the mid-to-late twentieth century. 2) It is an outstanding example of Dostoyevsky's psychological skills, depicting a character motivated by many contradictory impulses. Such contradictions were not clearly understood in the nineteenth century, but Freud and modern psychology generally were to explore in depth the irrational bases of much human thought. 3) One of the most salient characteristics of the Underground Man is his p Read More
