Illyria

Coinage of the two Greek-Illyrian city states: Apollonia and Dyrrhachium By Gyula Petr&#225nyi This page deals with a less known chapter of ancient Greek numismatics: the coinage of Apollonia and Dyrrhachium. These towns, founded by Corcyra on the Illyrian coast of the Adriatic, produced similar coins throughout that justifies common handling. Their earliest coins, the silver staters copied the Corcyrean prototype both in design and weight standard. Later, for a short period Pegasus type staters were minted under Corinthian influence. The best-known, long series of cow/calf type silver drachms were produced from the end of the third century till the first half of the first century BC, the picture shows one of these from Apollonia. They played an important role in the N-E Balkan area during Read More

INDIA: A WEBPAGE FOR THE ANCIENT COINS AND MEDIEVAL COINS OF INDIA

Votes:0
NUPAM'S WEBPAGE FOR THE INDIAN COINS Coins are reflections of history! The study of coins, also called numismatics , has been crucial in deciphering history. The study of ancient and medieval coinage have authenticated historical events known from literature, artifacts and archaeological findings. Indeed, the history of the Indian subcontinent and it's coinage share the complexities as evident in presence of hundreds of dynasties and their attempt to issue distinct coinage over thousands of years. Paradoxically this very facet made the study of Indian history and numismatics an interesting but challenging proposition. Modern research in numismatics led to discoveries which firmly established existence of numerous rulers (and on many occasions entire dynasty!), as no trace of their presence Read More

A Companion to Rare Coin Collecting

Votes:0
A Companion to Rare Coin Collecting By Ray Wyman, Jr. Interested in rare coins? Do you want to start a rare coin collection? I wrote A Companion to Rare Coin Collecting for a group of investment advisors who needed a booklet that introduced basic concepts of the art of rare coin collecting. For that reason, this text offers equal time to the pros and cons of rare coin collecting. It provides good insights on how to avoid common mistakes and provides simple layman explanations. In the chapter "Are Rare Coins for You?" readers will find out if they fit the profile for this form of investing. "What is a Rare Coin?" helps define the topic of true rarity while the succeeding chapters - "Grading Services", "The Market", "How to Buy Rare Coins", "Holding Coins", and "Selling Coins" - help define Read More

Ancient Coins and Modern Fakes, How to Tell the Difference

ANCIENT COINS & MODERN FAKES How To Tell The Difference An Authentication Primer by Dennis J. Kroh The summary of a talk given at the Numismatic Theatre during the 99th Annual American Numismatic AssociationConvention in Seattle on Friday, August 24, 1990 INTRODUCTION There have been forgeries of Ancient Coins for as long as there has been coinage. This program will not explore the contemporary counterfeits (those made in Ancient times), but only the items made in recent times for purposes of fraud. This is not intended to be an end-all monograph on the subject (as such can never be), but it is simply an elementary synopsis on authentication to assist collectors from being deceived when obtaining coins from unusual sources, and to help them to discover if they have been already victimized. British American Bank Note Company

The British American Bank Note Company "The Early Years" By: Manuel J. Pires (CPMS #961) HISTORY The British American Bank Note Company was formed in 1866, just one year before Canada's Confederation. The company was established in Montreal by a group of engraving and printing craftsmen. Before the company's creation, two separate groups went ahead with plans to start a Canadian company that would engrave and print postage and revenue stamps, bonds and other financial documents, for the nation in waiting. These groups also recognized the opportunity to serve the bank note printing needs of Canada's chartered banks, which at the time had to go abroad for their paper currency requirements. With a rapidly growing economy, further opportunity existed in the printing of bonds, debenture Read More

Welcome to the home of The Society of U.S. Pattern Collectors! For those of you not familiar with this fascinating area of numismatics, patterns are prototypes for coins that, for the most part, were never approved for circulation. Most patterns are very rare, some unique, and others unknown outside of museums. A good place to start learning about these pieces is our Beginner's Corner which includes a page on How to use this Website or the Photo Gallery which contains examples of many of the different pattern issues. The United States Mint produced well over a thousand different patterns, as well as many die trial and experimental pieces. Despite the great rarity of many of these individual items, the great variety makes the series surprisingly collectible. There are approximately 350 coll Read More

Jim's Medieval Coin Page - A Virtual Tour of my Collection

. Jim's Medieval Coins I invite you to take a guided tour of my collection of medieval French coins. Along the way you will see over twenty examples of coins that are anywhere from 600 to 1000 years old. The tour should take less than 10 minutes, depending upon the speed at which you read the short descriptions. I've arranged it so that the images for the next page will load into your computer's cache before you actually get there. (How did I do that?) This speeds up the tour, but will only work if you go through the pages in order. Just follow the links marked "Continue the tour - " and you'll be in good shape. I've also marked the first coin of each section with a number to give you an idea where you are in the tour. Continue the tour - We'll begin with a little History lesson . . . For Read More

These rarely come in top shape, but when they do, it is a delight to own them. One may ask, why should you pay the prices that I have placed on these when you can buy in bulk at much cheaper rates? The answer is that if you have done so before, you will realize that to get some at the quality that we are offering here, you will have to buy a large quantity and only a few would end up being this good. Miguel's Coin Collecting Page From an initial interest in U.S. Morgan silver dollars, I've expanded my collecting to include silver coins, the larger the better, from all over the World. Mark, ryal, piastre, peso, franc, talers...these are only a few of the currencies that by the early 20th century still meant silver coins for general circulation. By the 1950's -1960's, however, all these silver coins would disappear from circulation as country after country substituted them with paper money and "token" coins made from non-precious metals. Today, they are only minted as bullion or to commemorate a special ocassion. Glen's World Banknote Page IBNS & SPMC ***** Welcome !!!! ***** The collecting of banknotes (paper money) can be very interesting hobby. You can bring a little bit of history and culture of other countries into you home without ever leaving. Compared to stamp collecting and coin collecting, banknote collecting is a young hobby. Only since the 1960's has there been a real attempt to catalog and document the many notes of the world. There are many ways to collect paper money, you can collect from one country, continent or period of time. Others collect by theme, topic, historical figure, animal, etc. One side of banknote collecting not talked about much is the security. The security features incorporated into the making of banknotes can be quite elaborate and varied. From the use of spec Read More

Also, there are platinum and silver bullion coins such as Silver Maples, Platinum Nobles, Platinum Koalas, and Silver Kookaburras. Did you know that the U.S. mints millions of gold coins each year? This site is designed for the few people out there that collect gold and silver bullion coins, as well as those who invest in bullion coins. It's time for us to get back to doing what inspired us to open the museum in the first place: the excitement of traveling to new places, the delight of meeting fellow adventurers, and the thrill of the hunt for copper. The museum lives on in each of the people who visited us over the years, and its spirit certainly will be with us, the curators, forever. We're grateful for the opportunity we've had to host fellow collectors (and plenty of just plain curious folks) and to meet so many charismatic fans devoted to experiencing the whimsy that life offers. Latest news (as of may/2003): (I wanted to make a ticker around here, but unfortunately, do not have the time to learn to do neat tricks). By Seiichi Arai Since 1997/8/03 Hits Now ! When I returned from overseas business trip, I was aware of some money left in my pocket. Looking at their motifs was very interesting, because I was able to touch the culture and history of the country through them. This experience is the trigger of my collecting coins and bank notes. It is also fun to imagine the people in the ancient who had been using the money which just now in my hand.
