Votes:0 THE PHOENICIAN AND PUNIC SETTLEMENT OF MONTE SIRAI T he archaeological area of Monte Sirai is only 2 Km. far from the town of Carbonia (S.S. 126) and can be easily reached by an asphalt road. The Phoenician and Punic town stands on a hill whose history dates back to the Neolithic (as the presence of the Domus de Janas witnesses) and after to the Nuragic Age. However it is only with the Phoenicians, that occupied the hill from about 750 B.C., and above all with the Carthaginians (from 520 B.C.) that the town assumed the look still visible today. T he settlement consists of different areas; in this way the town can be visited following different itineraries : the inhabited area and its quarters, squares and houses; the sacred places with the temple of the town and the tophet; the necropolise Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 in Italiano Rock Art in Valtellina Valtellina is situated in the north of Lombardy (Italy, Sondrio district ), along the Adda river (flowing into the lake of Como), and near the Swiss border. High mountains (Bernina, the highest, 4000 m - 12000 ft), beautiful ski-stations (Bormio the most important, Stelvio for summer-skiing in the glacier), and excellent red wine. Snow in winter, green woods in summer in the National Park of Stelvio. Strictly related to Valcamonica, Valtellina Rock Art is one of the most interesting in the Alps. It is mainly concentrated in two sites: Teglio and Grosio , both in the middle valley. Near Teglio many Copper Age (2700-2200 B.C.) stelae were found, while near the medieval castle of Grosio thousands of engraved figures were discovered in 1970 by Davide Pace in Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 Some years ago, while studying the morphology of Oscan and Celtic toponyms on the Caprione, the most eastern promontory of the Liguria Riviera ( Oscan etymology kaprum = scapegoat ) we have discovered five holy megalithic ( literal meaning = big stones ) places, not reciprocally visible. Using holism we performed geological analyses to demonstrate the presence of human work on creating these megalithic structures ( E. Calzolari & D. Gori, 1999 ) although these analyses cannot be used as a specific dating test they do show that there has been no recent anthropological action. We have checked that the megalithic places are located near faults, fractures, dolines, and ancient water springs. While studying connections between geology and geobiology, we have laid out the five holy megalithic pl Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 Discovery of a Mesolithic burial at Mezzocorona, Trento, Italy. The modern town of Mezzocorona is located north of Trento, in the Adige valley, by the northern margin of the Rotaliana plain, a fertile alluvial fan at the confluence of the Noce stream and the river Adige. The archaeological site of Borgonuovo was discovered in 1991 by Leone Merchiori and Remo Carli during digging works for the construction of a terrace wall, which truncated the anthropic deposit. The site is situated at the foot of the cliffs of Monte di Mezzocorona which are of a Dolomitic instable stone, as seen by the fissures that appear in it and the frequency of the rockfalls. The site catchment area, which is characterized by the presence of minor caves and rockshelters, is located just under the cliff wall, at an al Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 FIRST ANCIENT NEOLITHIC FINDINGS IN GARFAGNANA Northern Tuscany, Italy The Upper and Middle valley of Serchio river, between Apuane Alps and Northern Appennines has been known for a long time because of the great number of Final Epigravettian and Mesolithic (Sauveterrian and Castelnovian) sites, but only recently the archaeological researches performed by Paolo Notini allowed us to recognize two Neolithic sites in Pieve Fosciana commune (LU) that have been excavated in 1995-1997. The first one is located in the site of Pian di Cerreto, the other one at Muraccio site and they are around two Km. far away from each other, at the top of an ancient river terrace; both of them have been heavily disturbed by ancient agricultural practices. The only structure left in Pian di Cerreto is an oblong c Read More Go to Site
