"What is Jazz?"

"What is Jazz?" What Is JAZZ? Jazz is America's classical music. In a four part ARTSEDGE lecture series, recorded live at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Dr. Billy Taylor, noted jazz pianist, historian, and educator, shares glimpses of his extensive knowledge of jazz music from its roots in the African-American slavery experience, through the early days of ragtime, and onward through swing, bop, and progressive jazz. Dr. Taylor combines academic research with a wealth of personal knowledge of the music and shares many fascinating anecdotes about the great artists of jazz. He cautions, however, that four hours is only long enough to scratch the surface. For an in depth look at jazz history, get a copy of "Jazz Piano, A Jazz History." To hear Dr. Taylo Read More

Lush Lives Ladies of Jazz from 1930 to 1990 To begin exploring select a decade from the menu above. Women throughout the music field have had to struggle with the barriers society and male attitudes have imposed. The Jazz field is no exception, somehow women artists have been able to leave their mark despite these obstacles, maybe because their instrument has usually been a most personal one, the human voice. The voice which is given to emotional expression, is able to convey what is reserved to the instrumentalist of the highest caliber. Women jazz vocalists were able to combine emotion with musicianship. This site pays homage to those talented artists who have left a mark on the music field and on the soul of Jazz. Louis Armstrong: A Cultural Legacy

Louis Armstrong: A Cultural Legacy "Louis Armstrong's station in the history of jazz is umimpeachable. If it weren't for him, there wouldn't be any of us." Dizzy Gillespie, 1971 Early Days in New Orleans Armstrong was born in one of the poorest sections of New Orleans on Aug. 4, 1901. "He was a prodigy," says art historian and curator Marc Miller, "a hard-working kid who helped support his mother and sister by working every type of job there was, including going out on street corners at night to sing for coins." At age 7, he bought his first real horn--a cornet. When Armstrong was 11 years old, juvenile court sent him to the Jones Home for Colored Waifs for firing a pistol on New Year's Eve. While there, he had his first formal music lessons and played in the home's brass band. After about Read More

He's been a musical inspiration to me and I can say I've learned a lot from his playing. I'm proud to present Pat's chord collection here and hope you gain some insight from his work. Styles of Jazz - a map

[Styles] [Artists] [Performance] [Media] [Art] [Education] [Retailers] [Labels] [Other Resources] This chart of Jazz Styles is derived from Joachim Berendt's The Jazz Book . This book is indispensible to any person seeking a comprehensive survey of the history of Jazz. Berendt masterfully covers the evolution of this complex music from several parallel perspectives, helping readers absorb history from more than one direction. This structure also makes the book a pleasure to browse. I have adapted the map somewhat to include more specifically some genres of music. Please maintain healthy skepticism towards this two-dimensional representation of a thoroughly three-dimensional culture. Some things that are quite important may not be on this map, and some things that are relatively less import Read More
