Jacob Boehme (1575-1624 e.v.) by T. Apiryon Copyright ? 1995 Ordo Templi Orientis. All rights reserved. Also spelled Boehm, B?hme, B?hm or Behmen. German Protestant mystic and philosophical theologian. Boehme was born into a middle-class family at Alt Seidenberg, near G?rlitz, in Germany. He received little in the way of formal education, and settled down as a shoemaker in Gorlitz in 1599. Despite the limitations of his early training, he was an avid student of scripture, theology, and the writings of Paracelsus (q.v.), and devoted his spare time to the study of these subjects. He began to experience visions, and one day he had a powerful religious experience which was summed up in the phrase "In Yes and No all things consist." From this dialectical revelation he gradually develo Read More

DIOGENES OF SINOPE

Votes:0
Diogenes of Sinope by Ben Best I have long been inspired by the apocryphal story that "Diogenes of Sinope" went about ancient Greece vainly searching for an honest man. But I have no interest in being his apologist. Since there is no authenticated historical documentation about him I will relate some of the tradition about his life more from the point of view of intrinsic interest than from concern for historical accuracy. A major source of information is the third century (AD) Roman doxographer Laetius Diogenes, from whom much that follows is taken. "Cynicism" of ancient Greece and Rome derives its name from the Greek word for "Dog". Aristotle refers to Diogenes as "The Dog" and Diogenes seems to have accepted the nickname. Cynicism was not a "school of philosophy", but rather an "erratic Read More

Albert Camus

Albert Camus (1913-1960) It is hard to say if this sermon had any effect on our townsfolk. M. Othon, the magistrate, assured Dr. Rieux that he had found the preacher's arguments "absolutely irrefutable." But not everybody took so unqualified a view. To some the sermon simply brought home the fact that they had been sentenced, for an unknown crime, to an indeterminate period of punishment. And while a good many people adapted themselves to confinement and carried on their humdrum lives as before, there were others who rebelled and whose one idea now was to break loose from the prison-house. --from The Plague Timeline [Courtesy of Michael Lawrence Chabinyc.] 1913 Born in Algeria. 1914 Father drafted into WWI and killed in France. 1930 Finished early schooling majoring in philosophy with a go Read More

Aristotle - History for Kids!

Aristotle for Kids - the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle Aristotle A papyrus with a scrap of Aristotle's "Politics" Aristotle's father was Nicomachus, a doctor who lived near Macedon, in the north of Greece. So unlike Socrates and Plato , Aristotle was not originally from Athens. He was not from a rich family like Plato, though his father was not poor either. When Aristotle was a young man, about 350 BC , he went to study at Plato's Academy. Plato was already pretty old then. Aristotle did very well at the Academy. But he never got to be among its leaders, and when Plato died, the leaders chose someone else instead of Aristotle to lead the Academy. Probably Aristotle was pretty upset about this. Soon afterwards, Aristotle left Athens and went to Macedon to be the tutor of the young pri Read More

Epicurus (341–270 B.C.) founded one of the major philosophies of ancient Greece, helping to lay the intellectual foundations for modern science and for secular individualism. Many aspects of his thought are still highly relevant some twenty-three centuries after they were first taught in his school in Athens, called “the Garden.” Epicurus's philosophy combines a physics based on an atomistic materialism with a rational hedonistic ethics that emphasizes moderation of desires and cultivation of friendships. Jacques Maritain Center : Readings Abelard Abelard , Peter, dialectician, philosopher, and theologian, b. 1079; d. 1142. Peter Abelard (also spelled Abeillard, Abailard, etc., while the best MSS. have Abaelardus ) was born in the little village of Pallet, about ten miles east of Nantes in Brittany. His father, Berengar, was lord of the village, his mother's name was Lucia; both afterwards entered the monastic state. Peter, the oldest of their children, was intended for a military career, but, as he himself tells us, he abandoned Mars for Minerva, the profession of arms for that of learning. Accordingly, at an early age, he left his father's castle and sought instruction as a wandering scholar at the schools of the most renowned teachers of those days. John Dewey John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher and educator whose writings and teachings have had profound influences on education in the United States. Dewey's philosophy of education, instrumentalism (also called pragmatism), focused on learning-by-doing rather than rote learning and dogmatic instruction, the current practice of his day. A concise summary and explanation of Dewey's educational philosophy can be found in the International Encyclopedia of Education (Pergamon, 1994). Dewey was a very prolific writer. The following bibliography references his most popular works on education. His tendency to disputation is perhaps best demonstrated by his book Sic et Non , a list of 158 philosophical and theological questions about which there were divided opinions. RENE DESCARTES (1595-1650) "I am thinking therefore I exist." (Latin: Cogito ergo sum) from the Discourse on Method Rene Descartes was a famous French mathematician, scientist and philosopher. He was arguably the first major philosopher in the modern era to make a serious effort to defeat skepticism. His views about knowledge and certainty, as well as his views about the relationship between mind and body have been very influential over the last three centuries. Descartes was born at La Haye (now called Descartes), and educated at the Jesuit College of La FlÈche between 1606 and 1614. Descartes later claimed that his education gave him little of substance and that only mathematics had given him certain knowledge. Thomistic Philosophy - the philosophy Thomas Aquinas

Votes:0
The Da Vinci Con Thomistic Philosophy is inspired by the philosophical methods and principles used by Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274), a Dominican Friar and Theologian , in his explanation of the Catholic faith. Aquinas, who is most renowned for his Five Ways of Proving the Existence of God , believed that both faith and reason discover truth, a conflict between them being impossible since they both originate in God. Believing that reason can, in principle, lead the mind to God, Aquinas defended reason's legitimacy, especially in the works of Aristotle. The philosophy of Aquinas continues to offer insights into many lingering problems in Metaphysics, the Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Religion and Ethics.
