Chile's confining strip of land extends almost 2,700 miles down the western coast of South America. The highest peaks of the Andes Mountains are snow covered year round. The climate ranges from rugged (arctic-like) conditions in the south, moderate to mild in the central regions, and in the north, the Atacama Desert is the driest in the world. (Hundreds of years can pass between rain storms, and in that desert, a storm in 1971 was the first in 400 years). Most Chileans live in metropolitan areas. Santiago , the capital, has over 6 million residents (including the suburbs) . It's crowded and suffering from air pollution caused by light industry and mass transit vehicles. Chile's population (1999 estimate), was 15.5 million, with approximately 48 people per square mile. The official language Read More

CHILE Introduction C hile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District. There are a multitude of very good parks here, and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America. Location, Geography Climate For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad Read More

Easter Island in words and pictures

It is one of the most isolated islands in the world but 1200 years ago a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon its shores. Over the centuries that followed a remarkable society developed in isolation on the island. For reasons still unknown they began carving giant statues out of volcanic rock. These monuments, known, as "moai" are some of the most incredible ancient relics ever discovered. The people of Easter Island called themselves the Rapa Nui. Where did they come from and why did they disappear? Science has learned much about the enigma of Easter Island and has put to rest some of the more bizarre theories, but questions and controversies remain.
