Positive Adoption Language The way we talk - and the words we choose - say a lot about what we think and value. When we use positive adoption language, we say that adoption is a way to build a family just as birth is. Both are important, but one is not more important than the other. Choose the following positive language instead of the negative language that helps perpetuate the myth that adoption is second best. By using positive adoption language, you'll reflect the true nature of adoption, free of innuendo. . POSITIVE LANGUAGE NEGATIVE LANGUAGE . . Medical fears pull adoptees to past They want to know their disease risks. Foes fear a privacy invasion. By Marie McCullough Inquirer Staff Writer (The Philadelphia Inquirer, Monday, July 22, 1996) Deb Schwarz assumed that she was entitled to know her parents' medical histories, even though, under Pennsylvania law, she knew she couldn't get their names. Like many adoptees, she was naive. It took months for the agency that handled her adoption 36 years ago to dig her file out of the archives -- and only seconds for her to see that the information was worthless. ``Both your parents,'' the agency divulged, ``were in their mid-20s and were considered American.'' But what really outraged Schwarz, and turned the San Francisco marketing research consultant into a national crusader for open adopti Read More

Forced adoptions of victim's babies Date: Sun, 23 Jul 1995 12:23:29 -0700 (PDT) italiano BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Renee D'Elia Pallares' son and pregnant daughter-in-law vanished in 1977, during the ``dirty war'' that Argentina's military governments waged on real and imagined political foes. She long ago gave up hope of finding them alive. But the frail 75-year-old Uruguayan is sure she has found a link to the couple -- a high school student named Carlos. Blood tests indicate he has a 99.9 percent chance of being her lost grandson. Carlos may be one of dozens of children apparently born in captivity to suspected leftists later executed by security forces. Recent evidence revealed that military and police officers illegally adopted some of the babies and turned others over to unrela Read More

Judaism 101: Birth and the First Month of Life

Votes:0
Birth and the First Month of Life Level: Basic Birth In Jewish law , although the human soul exists before birth, human life begins at birth, that is, at the time when the child is more than halfway emerged from the mother's body. For more details about the consequences of this doctrine, see Abortion . Judaism completely rejects the notion of original sin. According to Judaism, a child is born pure, completely free from sin. We pray daily "Oh G-d, the soul which you gave me is pure. You created it, you fashioned it, you breathed it into me." Birth by Caesarean section is permitted in Jewish law, as would be just about any procedure necessary to preserve the life of the mother or the child. Online NewsHour Forum: Opening Adoption Records -- February 11, 1997

Votes:0
--> OPENING ADOPTION RECORDS February 11, 1997 Questions asked in this forum: Would open records mean more custody fights between birth mothers and adoptive parents? How do open records effect rates of adoption and abortion? Should there be a way for adoptees to find out their family health records without making contact with their birth-parents ? Not all adoptees want to find their birth-parents. What about adoptees and birth-parents who value their privacy? A woman who was raped askes whether there is a way to find out about her child without actually making contact? This topic inspired many emotional stories and comments. View some of the additional comments. Online NewsHour Links January 15, 1997 : Lee Hochberg looks at the controversy over opening adoption records . The NewsHour cover Read More

Texas Open Records Bills

Texas Open Records Bills The following is a message from Alicia Lanier, TXCare State Coordinator, regarding what happened to the Texas open records bills I am deeply disappointed that Democracy didn't work in our favor today as we had all hoped it would. This morning when the floor debate started, there were several of us in the gallery of the Texas House of Representatives. As a historic note, your "delegates" to this event were three adoptees (Joe Magill, Donna Little, Jana Spears), five birthmothers (Mary Cullinane, Paula Nielson, Kathy Campbell, Geri Bischoff, and me) and one adoptive mom (Geri, who's both). We arrived in fairly high spirits. You folks out there in Internetland along with offline supporters had fairly peppered the Representatives with e-mails, phone calls, and faxes ov Read More

Children with physical, developmental, or emotional handicaps who were once considered unadoptable are now being adopted ("special needs adoptions"). Adoption helps many of these children to grow up in permanent families rather than in foster homes or institutions. Parents with an adopted child wonder whether, when, and how to tell their child that he or she is adopted. They also want to know if adopted children face special problems or challenges. Child and adolescent psychiatrists recommend that the child be told about the adop Read More

Pact's name was chosen because of its meaning: a "pact" is a solemn agreement; to be of one mind; a covenant. At Pact, we believe that in making an adoption plan, birth parents and adoptive parents enter into an agreement to recognize and protect the best interests of the child. Essential to that agreement is a lifelong commitment to recognize, respect and address the dual heritages - both personal and cultural - that are the child's birth right. Why Do Adoptees Search? by Tina M. Musso - An Adoptee's Thoughts on Search

Votes:0
Why Adoptees Search? by Tina M. Musso These are some of my thoughts on why adoptees (at least why I) search. (c) March 1997 Why do I search? Why do they keep my past from me? Why does the rain fall and the grass grow? That is the way I was made. Unfortunately, I have no way to see the mold I was taken from nor can I see the recipe that made me who I am. I am an adoptee, who had loving parents and a decent childhood. I do not want to replace my family, I just want to know where I came from. However, a small group of people have decided that I have no say in my background, and so I am denied my background. Confidentiallity, that was not promised, at least in the law, to birth mothers. Closed adoption records started in the 1930's as a shield for illegitimate children. The closed records were Read More
